PBS Series: The Mormons

In 2010, PBS presented a 2 part series on Mormons as part of their American Experience/Frontline programming.

Here's a link to the PBS site. It has a lot of interesting information as well as  Parts 1 and 2 if you want to watch the entire series:

  1. I found it refreshing that ethnic diversity, in regards to Mormon converts, was shown in this documentary. I was curious about what the modern day ideas on the "curse of Cain" was. Hopefully, in the minds of most LDS members everyone is equal. However, the FLDS seems to be a different story. The Darger's squirmed when asked if they would take an African American woman as a sister wife. Disappointing.

    1. I seriously doubt the Dargers or the Browns would welcome an African American in their homes for a visit let alone as a wife! At least mainstream Mormons makes the attempt to accept African Americans. Fundamentalists (including the so called independents) do the exact opposite. Even that one encounter with an African American family man at the block party, you could see just how uncomfortable it was for Kody to have to talk to him. Which is prolly why the Browns were looking at a cul-de-sac in order to control who their neighbors are.

Strange how these creatures scream for acceptance on one hand, but are willing to disavow a group of people because of the color of their skin.

  2. in spite of "acceptance" of the blacks in 1978 (when their Prophet Brigham Young revealed his "forever" doctrine of the cursed race of cain would NEVER be given the priesthood on this earth ( so saith God) and was recanted with "NEW" revelation) there has NOT been a rush of blacks into mainstream mormonism - back then nor still today. too much info on the internet now to self-educate before you go buying their product they're still out selling door to door.

if you want to know the REAL reasons that "revelation" came about to let the blacks have the priesthood and be able to go to the temple, it's all documented at the link given below. It's all an interesting read but scroll down about halfway to "Events Leading up to the Revelation of 1978."

  3. "Anonymous" there are PLENTY of leaders in the LDS Church who are African American as well as members from every other ethnic background. I think the problem is that many people don't understand the way that the Church sets up its local leaders. As a matter of fact, a very good friend of mine is the daughter of a Stake President. He is also an African American man who loves the Church that he helps to lead. He is in direct leadership/advisory over several thousand people. They seek his guidance in spiritual matters and look to him as an authority. Much like Catholics would view the role of a Bishop.
I can easily continue to name person after person who serve in positions of authority and they derive from many nations and ethnic background.

  4. In one of the last episodes, they showed a picture in their home of the Salt City LDS Temple. Why? If they are polygamists, they ARE NOT members of teh LDS Church, and will never be allowed in the temple? So why have the picture of the temple in their home?
